Overnight boating with ViaPads

ViaPads connects boaters with welcoming docks, moorings, and anchorages. Here's how to prepare for a safe night on the water.

Before you arrive

Know the listing

  • Check water depth at the dock or mooring
  • Verify the dock length and cleat configuration
  • Note any tide or current information
  • Confirm restroom and facility access

Prepare your vessel

  • Fenders deployed
  • Dock lines ready (bow, stern, spring lines)
  • Anchor ready as a backup
  • Navigation lights working

Docking

  1. Approach slowly — never approach a dock faster than you're willing to hit it
  2. Account for wind and current
  3. Secure bow and stern lines first
  4. Add spring lines to prevent movement
  5. Adjust fenders to protect your hull

Anchoring (if anchoring off)

  1. Choose a spot with good holding ground (mud or sand)
  2. Check depth — allow for tidal range
  3. Set the anchor with good scope (7:1 for overnight)
  4. Confirm the anchor is set by backing down gently
  5. Note your position with landmarks

Overnight comfort

  • Use a stern anchor to reduce swinging
  • Turn on your anchor light
  • Keep a bilge alarm or monitor
  • Secure loose items below deck

Etiquette

  • Arrive quietly — sound carries on water
  • Respect quiet hours
  • Keep your distance from other vessels
  • Thank your host
